Puerto Madero

Back in the year 1882, the Argentine National Government, decided that Buenos Aires needed a new port. The one functioning at the time had become obsolete. It wasnt deep nor big enough to cope with the growing commercial boom. The task was given to Eduardo Madero, who designed and developed the new project. Construction began on the 1st of April 1887 and finished in March 1898.
Only 10 years later, the port, once again became obsolete! The development of new ships, which required even deeper canals, meant that Puerto Madero could not cope with the new scenario. So yet again, a new project was set in motion, and the actual "Puerto Nuevo" was developed.

From this moment onwards the whole area began a slow but irreversible decline. There was talk at some stage of demolishing all of the buildings in the area. Fortunately that did not happen.
The urban development of the area only started by the end of 1989, nearly a Century after the initial work was done on the port, and continues until today to develop at an icredible pace. The last couple of years have seen an incredible development both on the commercial side (with the development of a culinary circuit, office buildings, 5 star hotels and a number of companies who decided to set up their headquarters in the area), as well as the residential side.
This continued development forged Puerto Madero into one of the most exclusive neighbourhoods in the city. It is also one of the newest to develop. Its an area that has embraced the river. Buenos Aires is a city that has given its back to the river, but here, in this place the river plays a central role.
